Practice

A little combination you can practice on the heavy bag. You could also practice with a partner, just hold back the power on the strikes.

Start with a front kick (mae geri) from the back leg. After the impact, bring the leg halfway back, maintaining control and then step in with the same foot and drive forward with a rising forearm technique (age uke). The mae geri can target the solar plexus, abdomen, hip or knee. The age uke is coming up under the chin.

You can see on my bag I like to mark the knee and solar plexus height with tape to assist targeting.

New year.

The start of a new year is a great opportunity to make positive choices about many things including your Karate training. Do some practice on day one and you’re off to a good start. Sanchin, Kusanku, basic techniques, push-ups, stretching…. Anything you can do is worthwhile.

2025

Happy new year everyone.

Term 1 starts 27/01/25

Harrisville – Monday 4-30-5:30pm

Ipswich – Wednesday 10-11am

Saifa Holiday Challenge!

Here is a video of a kata called Saifa. Some students may have seen it before, most will not have. Side view and front view at slow speed to show details. I challenge all students to learn this kata over the holidays. It is entirely possible to learn the sequence in that time. Learning from a video can be a challenge but it also lets you pause to look at details, work on certain parts and watch it on repeat to become familiar with the movements. Don’t worry about the applications of the movements, just try to learn the sequence. It’s relatively short and repeats many parts so it’s actually only about half as many techniques as it looks like.

Anyone who does learn the full kata will be rewarded.

Thank you.

Thank you all for another great year of Karate. Great progress all around. I hope everyone has enjoyed themselves.

I wish you all safe, happy holidays.
See you in 2025.
